Welcome to the October Edition of the Wellness Reset Newsletter!
This month, we come together to recognize several important health observances that empower women and encourage overall wellness. We’ll explore Breast Cancer Awareness Month, World Mental Health Day, International Observe the Moon Night, Indigenous Peoples' Day, Day of the Girl, and World Menopause Month. We’ll also connect these observances with the principles of yoga, grounding ourselves in mindfulness and self-care as we honor the body, mind, and spirit.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month: A Tribute to Patricia Holder
This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I honor my mother-in-law, Patricia Holder, who transitioned to the Ancestral Realm in June 2019 after her courageous battle with breast cancer. Patricia was more than just a mother-in-law; she was one of my closest friends, a constant source of wisdom, and the jewel dropper of our family. Her strength, grace, and unwavering love for her family left a lasting impact on everyone she touched. To this day, we carry her spirit with us, but her presence is deeply missed, not just in moments of celebration but in the small, everyday moments where her influence was felt the most.
As we enter Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we are reminded of the importance of early detection, education, and the need to continue raising awareness. This month serves as a call to action for women everywhere, it is vital to:
Get annual mammograms: Regular screenings can catch any changes early.
Perform breast self-exams: Familiarize yourself with your breasts to identify any unusual lumps or changes. Early detection is key to successful treatment.
Consult your healthcare provider: If you are not yet at the recommended age for regular mammograms but feel a lump or notice any changes, don’t hesitate to schedule an appointment with your primary care physician for a referral.
Incorporating mindfulness from yoga can also play a role in supporting our overall well-being. Pranayama (breath control) is particularly powerful in managing stress and anxiety, which may influence breast health. Taking moments to breathe deeply and connect inward allows us to listen to our body’s needs, bringing a sense of peace and control as we prioritize our health.
World Menopause Month: Embracing Change with Support and Compassion
Menopause is a natural phase in a woman’s life, marking a significant transition that brings hormonal shifts often accompanied by both physical and emotional challenges. Delayna Watkins, Women's Wellness Expert, Menopause Mayven, and Founder of the Women’s Wellness Lounge (www.womenswellnesslounge.org), emphasizes the importance of raising awareness and offering support to women navigating this stage of life.

World Mental Health Day (October 10th)
This year, World Mental Health Day focuses on making mental health a universal human right. Women often bear emotional labor in the workplace, at home, and within their communities, so it is essential to check in on our mental well-being. Yoga’s philosophy teaches us about the union of mind and body—reminding us that mental health is just as important as physical health. Practices such as meditation, gentle asanas (postures), and self-compassion are key tools for reducing anxiety, fostering resilience, and promoting emotional balance. On this day, take time to explore self-care activities such as yoga or journaling to enhance your mental health and well-being.
International Day of the Girl: Empowering the Next Generation
The International Day of the Girl highlights the importance of empowering young girls through education, health care, and access to resources. Supporting girls as they navigate puberty and womanhood is a passion of mine, especially through the work we do at The Womb Space Movement. We believe that every girl deserves the tools to thrive and flourish, not just physically, but emotionally and spiritually as well.
Yoga plays an essential role in this journey, helping to foster self-awareness, self-confidence, and body appreciation—valuable tools for every girl on her path to becoming her most empowered self. By integrating yoga, we provide young girls with practices that encourage inner strength, mindfulness, and the appreciation of their unique bodies.
To continue this mission, join us for our upcoming event, What's Your Woman Story? on October 26th from 12-3pm at SCO MS 35 Beacon, 272 MacDonough St., Brooklyn, NY 11233. This event is designed for girls aged 12+ and women, offering a space for meaningful discussions, shared experiences, and supportive community connections. It’s a free event, and we encourage you to reserve your tickets in advance at The Womb Space Movement.
Indigenous Peoples' Day (October 14th): Reconnecting Through Yoga and Native Traditions
Indigenous cultures have long emphasized the interconnectedness of physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. On this day, we honor their wisdom and traditions, which often align with yogic teachings of living in harmony with nature and others. Recognize the value of Indigenous healing practices and their focus on holistic wellness, much like yoga.
A growing community of Indigenous teachers is using yoga to reconnect with their cultural practices and offer healing to their communities. This approach resonates deeply with the core principles of yoga, emphasizing connection to the land, mindfulness, and holistic well-being.
In an article by Yoga Journal, How These Indigenous Yogis Are Connecting Yoga & Native Traditions, Indigenous yogis are blending their spiritual traditions with yoga to address the needs of their people. This fusion of practices offers a unique path to healing trauma, strengthening community ties, and reclaiming ancestral wisdom.
If you’re interested in connecting with Indigenous yoga teachers, check out Native Strength Revolution at nativestrengthrevolution.org, a resource dedicated to finding Indigenous yoga instructors who serve communities across North America.
As we honor Indigenous Peoples' Day, we can reflect on how yoga, combined with cultural traditions, can deepen our connection to ourselves and the earth. Through mindfulness and respect for these traditions, we celebrate the wisdom that Indigenous peoples bring to the world of wellness and beyond.
International Observe the Moon Night (October 21st)
Though it may seem unrelated to health, International Observe the Moon Night offers a symbolic opportunity to reflect on the moon’s feminine energy, cycles, and the natural rhythms of life.
For many women, syncing their wellness routines—particularly with menstruation, menopause, and sleep—around the lunar cycle offers greater harmony with the body’s rhythms. Practicing moon salutations or focusing on Chandra Namaskar (yoga for the moon) can cultivate a sense of balance and calm, allowing you to honor the connection between the celestial and the personal, the vastness of the universe, and the intricacies of your health.
Integrating Yoga for Holistic Wellness
As we navigate the various health observances in October, yoga offers a powerful toolkit to enhance our physical, emotional, and mental well-being. By embracing yoga’s tenets of self-awareness, mindfulness, and connection, we can:
Nurture our physical health: Yoga improves flexibility, strengthens muscles, and supports cardiovascular health. Regular practice can reduce the risk of many chronic illnesses, including breast cancer and heart disease.
Support mental well-being: Meditation and breathing exercises are known to reduce stress, improve focus, and promote emotional resilience, which is particularly crucial for women balancing work, family, and personal health.
Cultivate community and self-care: Whether through group yoga classes or quiet home practice, yoga reminds us to slow down, breathe deeply, and care for ourselves. This practice is essential for maintaining wellness during life transitions like menopause or the challenges of caregiving.
